Environmental education in Borneo

For the long term protection of the tropical rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra, and a safe future for the orangutans, education of the local population on environmental issues is a vital requirement.

Since 2008 we have been supporting the Indonesian organization Yayorin, in Pangkalan Bun (Central Kalimantan Province, Borneo). Yayorin is managing a 'Kampung Konservasi' (Conservation Village), providing environmental education for kindergarden and school children as well as for farmers and people with smaller gardens. A library bus reaches over thirty schools and provides education to over 1,000 pupils per year.

In addition, smaller learning centers in different villages are being established. In 2010 our organisation adopted the Sungai Terantang Learning Center which has been very successful in educating the village's inhabitants, especially its children. A report on the Learning Center's activities can be downloaded here (PDF, 1.9 MB).
